Something ExTrA over La Silla<\/p><\/div>Based on ESO La Silla Observatory<\/a>, the three beehive-shaped domes hide 0.6-m telescopes called ExTrA<\/a> (short for Exoplanets in Transits and their Atmospheres<\/a>), which are from 2017 active instruments for study the structure and composition of Earth-sized worlds, and address some fundamental questions about planets in our Galaxy. The Galaxy we see just over the domes as the majestic Milky Way. In the sky, also the Earth’s atmosphere could take some attention as it is covered by complicatedly structured reddish airglow<\/a>, caused mostly by the emission of atomic oxygen but also OH radicals somewhere between 85 and 300 kilometers above the Earth’s surface. Perfect clear and dark skies over the Chilean Atacama Desert<\/a> made this phenomenon visible even to the naked eyes. Captured on July 2nd, 2019, and used Canon 6D modified, Samyang 24mm, f1.8, ISO 10000, 41×15 seconds single exposures from tripod.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
