Reindeers and Auroral Spikes
Some people say “to see an aurora and die”. Well, after yesterday, I think there is always much more to see. Despite the unpleasant cold, I am happy I managed the around-4-hour trip with my friends from cloudy Tromso for clear skies in Finland. The aurora was truly brilliant, however, we were rewarded for our tenacity with even more. A giant herd of reindeer was grazing on a frozen lake that we spontaneously arrived at in a strong wind. In just that direction, the aurora created an incredible view with its “spikes” structure. I have never seen this before and it only convinced me that “to see Aurora” is only the beginning 🙂 For gallery below, used Canon Ra, Samyang 12mm, f2.8 (wide views) and Sigma 35mm and 50mm (smaller views), ISO 2000, various exposures. The reindeer shot was taken with 50mm, f1.8, ISO 5000, 1/4s (panorama of two images) from tripod.

And another, even greater aurora appeared on 14 February 2025 over Sommarøy, Kvaløya, Norway. Seemigly from nothing, the aurora started to dance such brightly and dynamically, that nobody could even breath at least for a while.
