Dramatic Sunset over Lichnice Castle on 13 June 2025
Every year around the summer solstice, the Sun sets over the old Lichnice castle ruins when viewed from the Seč city. Lichnice was constructed in the first half of the 13th century. It was first mentioned in 1261, when it was in the possession of Smil of Ronow, who called himself Smil of Lichtenburg, thereby creating the von Lichtenburg family. At the end of the 16th century, it lost its importance and got abandoned then. From the beginning of 17th century was described as ruins. In 2017, it has been opened to the wider public after reconstruction, offering a wonderful view of the Iron Mountains from a new lookout tower or a rich cultural program, especially in summer.
On Friday June 13th, 2025, I was lucky with this series of sunset shots while dramatic changes occurred in the Sun’s picture due to inhomogeneity in our atmosphere. The whole sequence shows about 5 minutes of the sunset show when the Sun slowly moved behind the lookout tower. Used Canon 6D, MTO-1000mm, f10, 1,4x teleconverter, ISO 640, 1/1600s exposure from tripod.
