Just an hour ago, on 12 September 2024 (around 19:18 UT), a bright aurora appeared in the sky over Záhradné, near Prešov, Slovakia. It lasted just about ten minutes, but it was truly a lucky one. Especially when the clouds closed the view shortly after this incredible sky surprise. Used Canon Ra, Sigma 35mm, f1.6, ISO 2000, 8s exposure.
NOTE: There are many observations of auroras this year as the Sun gets to the maximum of its activity. However, this year is also historically best in the number of observations even from central Europe. Partly because of the solar activity, but also due to better alert systems (connected to applications of smartphones) and better photography equipment. Just until now, there were 18 successful observations of the aurora from the Czech and Slovak Republic, which is twice more than during the whole last solar cycle (23).
