The pre-Christmas time 2018 will be very likely related to a comet. And just some comet. On 16th December 2018, just after 13 UTC, the comet 46P Wirtanen will approach very close to Earth. Well, not that close to be dangerous, but close enough to be visible even to unaided eyes. In fact, it will be the 10th closest (documented) cometary approach to Earth in all human history. And here comes my first experience with the arriving cosmic beauty on 5th December. I was just on the way back to my cottage in Ustupky, the Czech Republic, when I saw (finally) clear skies over me. So I stopped on a field close by my residence, where the sky was pretty dark and truly – the comet was visible to naked eyes as well! Not quite easily as it very difuse object, but very nicely located in Eridanus constellation where nothing else such dim is located. So was pretty sure it was the comet! Then I took my gear and captured this panoramatic view, where – of course – even the colors appeared, including the typical green one of comet’s atmosphere. Behind me, full Orion constellation was just rising in this pleasantly calm night. Used Canin 6D IR Baader modified, Sigma 50mm, f3.5, ISO 6400, panorama from single shots of 30s exposures from Vixen Polarie mount. Special VFFOTO and comet filter used for suppression light pollution influence.
